Francis Swaine
1720-1783,English painter and draughtsman. He worked as a messenger for a department of His Majesty's Navy in 1735 and seems to have been practising as a marine painter by the late 1740s, but there is little trace of his place in London's art world until his regular contributions from 1761 to the exhibitions of both the Free and Incorporated Societies of Artists. He was awarded the Society for the Encouragement of Arts' second prize for sea-pieces in 1764 and again in 1765. 'About the year 1770', reported Edwards, 'he painted the face of a wind-dial, with sea and ships, which he executed with a great neatness' Related Paintings of Francis Swaine :. | A drawing of a small British Sixth-rate warship in two positions | A two-decker of the Royal Navy and other shipping off St.Peter Port | A wooded river landscape in Hoolland with a Dutch hooder under sail in a brisk wind | A drawing of a British two-decker off Calshot Castle | Scene on the Thames | Related Artists: Paolo Veronese1528-1588

Italian painter and draughtsman. With Titian and Tintoretto he makes up the triumvirate of great painters of the late Renaissance in Venice. He is known as a supreme colourist and for his illusionistic decorations in both fresco and oil. His large paintings of biblical feasts executed for the refectories of monasteries in Venice and Verona are especially celebrated. He also produced many altarpieces, history and mythological paintings and portraits. His compositional sketches in pen, ink and wash, figure studies in chalk, and chiaroscuro modelli and ricordi form a significant body of drawings. He headed a family workshop that remained active after his death. Newman, Willie BettyAmerican, 1863-1935 Georg Andreas Hoffmann1752 -1808
